176: 'Hawaiian' Pinup
Calendar Illustration, ca 1946
In the field of Hawaiiana there are always borderline cases where you're left wondering as to what extent the picture can be tied to Hawaii, so we closely study ethnicity, fauna, flora, currents, cloud formations, anything that can help pinpoint a date, a location, or the name of the maker. Not that it matters much. Hawaiiana is not about the real Hawaii, but about someone's perception of Hawaii, even if that includes elements such as the Greek-style village in the background of this picture... What's your idea of Hawaii?
