Steady ocean travel to Hawaii was not established until in 1882 the Matson Shipping Company began serving Hawaii with its cargo ships. The '20s saw the first attempts at promoting Hawaii as a tourist destination with the advent of ocean liners. The Ocean Navigation Company even built the Royal Hawaiian Hotel as accommodation for guests arriving from the mainland on their luxurious ships. The crown jewel of Matson Navigation Company's fleet was the S.S. Lurline, and embodied the best of luxury-liner travel to Hawaii. On these pages, we have assembled an impresive collection of images from the period bewteen 1900-1950, consisting of luggage labels, posters, advertisements, and brochure covers. Each is available online in 5 different sizes and printed with archival inks on heavyweight art papers or canvas, not flimsy poster paper! Click an image for details. learn more

The sea voyages of history’s great discoverers, like Captain Cooke, eventually cleared the way for leisure cruises to the great destinations of a just-opened world.
The Matson Ocean Navigation Company was (and still is) a major navigator in the waters that link Hawaii to the continents. The company’s vintage posters, brochures, passenger lists, and menus are still sought-after collector’s items.
